What an amazing gift given to me as by my friend, Nancy. Domaine du Pastel de la Serre is the ONLY site in all of France where the entire production chain, from cultivation to creation of blue Pastel is done. My visit to this estate gave me the opportunity to learn and experience the ancient process of making blue Pastel, and keeps the history of Pastel alive for generations to come. Oui, it is all about the blue!

The “golden triangle”, which included this part of the Tarn, was once where the production of the blue Pastel flourished and became a source of considerable fortune for the region, but “cheaper opportunities” ended this rein. Bruno, a master Pastel maker and head of the estate, is focused on returning authentic Pastel making to this area of France one Isatis Tinctora green leafy plant at a time.

How is it that a green leafy plant makes a blue dye? It’s science and the process is complex, more than I can explain here. Along with a beautiful presentation and tour, with Bruno, guests were given the unique opportunity to dye a piece of linen. I decided I couldn’t miss this experience!

I purchased a vintage white linen dress from a brocante, and with Bruno’s guidance, I worked through the process of dyeing that little dress, based on a centuries old technique, at a historic chateau, atop a hill overlooking the Tarn.
